There is more to being a great magician than just learning the secret behind a few magic tricks. In fact, you don’t have to have great magical talent to impress an audience with a magic trick. Having a performance style that fits your personality is key. The worst thing that a new magician can do is learn a new trick and perform it exactly as it was taught to them. Too many times, I have seen a beginner performing a magic trick and using jokes that just don’t fit their personality. So here are the steps that I suggest to anyone new to the art of magic and illusion:
1. Find a particular trick or sleight that you would like to learn. Choose only one… not twenty at a time.
2. Practice the skill part of the trick over and over until you can perform it in your sleep. Then, get up the next day and practice it some more.
3. Create the story line (patter) that you will use when you perform this trick. I suggest using something different than what came in the instructions. You’re a magician now, so be creative. Think of something that will flow nicely and fit your personality. Don’t force jokes if you aren’t a funny person!

4. Put it all together and practice, practice, practice. Don’t show anyone the trick until you are so comfortable with it that you can perform it smoothly and naturally. I know you won’t listen to this step… no one does. But don’t get discouraged if you perform the trick for a friend and they bust you on the method. That has happened to every magician at some point. There are a couple of reasons why you might get caught. Maybe you messed up the “move” and they saw it. Maybe your misdirection needs some work. Maybe you caused them to look where you didn’t want them to look.

EXAMPLE: you have a gimmicked deck of cards and you start the trick off by saying “Here I have an ordinary deck of cards.” All that does is tells the spectator to question if the cards are ordinary. The better way to get the spectator to believe that the cards are “ordinary,” is to handle them in an ordinary fashion before you start the trick. The spectator will assume the cards are “ordinary” if you treat them that way.
TIP:The best way to get rid of a gimmicked deck of cards after the trick is over, is to work into a new trick that doesn’t require them. For instance, lets say you just made a card vanish from the deck and re-appear in your pocket. As you remove the card from your pocket, also remove your next trick and move right into it after a brief pause. Don’t give the spectator time to question the method of your first trick.
5. Don’t force people to watch you perform. Although it’s hard for me to believe, there are many people out there who just aren’t into magic. You’re not going to change them, so don’t perform for someone who doesn’t want to see a trick.
6. Know when to stop. When you are asked to perform some magic, you should show your top two or three magic tricks. Don’t go on and on until they are completely bored of you. Leave them wanting more.
7. Don’t challenge your audience to figure the trick out. When you perform magic, it should be fun for you and your spectators. If you position it as a puzzle, they will try to figure out the method, rather than enjoy the magic.
8. This is the toughest one. Don’t reveal the secret. If you do, you’re not going to be banned from all the magic clubs in the world. Angry magicians won’t beat you to death. You will, however, lose the amazement of your audience. They have no interest in learning magic; they just want to learn the secret. When they can’t figure it out, it is amazing and you are an incredible magician. As soon as they learn the method, they will be disappointed and they will no longer find you incredible.
9. Come up with a great answer to “Can you make my wife disappear?” You will hear this question any time you perform for a group of married people.
